About

Dr. Gaurav Bhutani is an Assistant Professor at IIT Mandi with interdisciplinary expertise across computational fluid dynamics, particulate and multiphase systems, avalanche and granular flow modelling, and scientific computing. He leads the Multiphase Flow Research Lab and develops computational frameworks that connect physics-based modelling, numerical methods, and modern machine learning.

Before joining IIT Mandi, he completed his PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics at Imperial College London and worked there as a postdoctoral researcher on multivariate population balance equations for multiphase flows.

Multiphase & Polydisperse Flow Modelling

Population balance modelling, CFD–DEM coupling and discrete element methods (DEM), flotation systems, bubble columns, non-Newtonian fluids, and fluidised-bed systems using finite element and finite volume methods.

Avalanche & Granular Flow Dynamics

Continuum-scale modelling of snow avalanches and granular flows, including depth-averaged formulations on idealised and real topographies, with applications to hazard-oriented computational studies.

HPC & Scientific Machine Learning

MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, solver development, GPU computing for CFD, and emerging approaches using PINNs and graph neural networks for flow and granular systems.
